FAQ

The common medications include Donepezil Hydrochloride for Alzheimer’s disease, Clonazepam, Gabapentin for seizures, Ropinirole, Pramipexole Dihydrochloride for movement disorder.

The neurologist conducts Electromyography or EMG to check the muscles’ response to electric stimulation from the motor neurons. It helps determine nerve damage.

Although a lot of neurologists do not treat pain, Dr. Steinberg has done a fellowship in pain management whereas other neurologists typically do not treat pain.

Dr. Steingberg has the capability and clinical acumen to help determine the root cause whether it’s the spine, or slip disc, or nerve damage. He will tailor a comprehensive pain management treatment plan based on his clinical assessment in conjunction with you.

Neurologists treat a constellation of symptoms, not a diagnosis. These can include memory problems (Alzheimer’s, Attention Deficit Disorder, head trauma), dizziness, stroke, inner ear problems, acute and chronic pain (migraines, headaches, spine problems, carpal tunnel), imbalance, insomnia, and daytime fatigue (sleep apnea, anxiety), spine problems (due to arthritis, disc problems or muscle), chronic pain, and more. Our Neurologist Fort Lauderdale, Dr. Steinberg did a fellowship in pain management and is also authorized to prescribe medical marijuana.

A neurologist Fort Lauderdale will first examine you to help determine the potential causes of your problem, and based on that assessment will order various diagnostic tests to help make the proper diagnosis to treat you.

Remember there is a difference between a psychiatrist and a neurologist. A psychiatrist treats primary psychiatric illnesses and abnormalities that affect the state of mind. Whereas a neurologist treats your medical/neurological illness and its secondary behavioral and psychosocial ramifications. A neurologist is different from a pain management physician in that a pain management physician essentially does the procedure, and a neurologist will work up the patient to determine the ideology of the pain.

1. Electroencephalogram

Electroencephalogram or EEG picks the electric impulses that neurons create while communicating to other neurons of the brain. It records electrical activity in the brain to help determine the cause of your condition. It’s an “EKG of the brain.”

In this test, the electrodes which are connected to a computer are placed on the person’s head. The electric signals are converted into patterns that help detect abnormalities in the brain and diagnose conditions for seizures, memory problems, and sleeping problems. Under the right circumstances, an EEG can be performed at home

2. Nerve conduction study and electromyography (EMG)

NCS and EMG is performed to determine the functionality and potential damage of a person’s nerves and muscles. The Nerve Conduction Study involves small electrical impulses to various nerves in the upper and lower extremities.

In the EMG small thin needles are inserted into various muscles to record the muscle activity. The combination of these two tests helps the neurologist determine the cause of someone’s pain or neurological problem.

3. Sleep Studies

This can be done at home or in the facility to help diagnose someone’s insomnia or daytime fatigue. Nowadays, Dr. Steinberg can order you an at-home sleep study, but if necessary, such as with patients who may have narcolepsy, it also can be done at a facility.

4. Neuropsychology Testing

This can help determine the cause of someone’s cognitive or behavioral problems such as Alzheimer’s, head injury, ADD, or anxiety. This test is performed by a licensed neuropsychologist.

5. Evoke Potentials

These are similar in nature to an EGG but are more specific to people who have head injuries, dizziness, or visual problems.

6. Lumbar Puncture

The neurologist collects spinal fluids through this test for which they inject anesthetics, antibiotics, or cancer treatments.
